Knitting 3D Forms

This was the final piece I planned to make, and really it was just aimed at tying everything together. I wanted to combine big shoulders with knitting, but also using the colours from the unisex jumper.

I used my own knitting machine this time, the Passap E6000, and tried out the same yarns that had been used in making the 'Divine' jumper. I wanted to use a stitch pattern that was sort of old-fashioned, in order to contrast with the futuristic design. I played about with spots and stripes.

One thing I like about making your own fabric and knitting it in particular as that you have a greater level of control over how the finished item looks. You also can be pretty sure that no one else is somewhere making the same thing.

Knitting is also great for switching up your colour palette just by changing the order in which you knit the yarns. After deciding on the spotted pattern as my main pattern, I was able to get 2 colour ways ('pink on blue' and 'blue on pink') that clashed nicely with each other.

Another nice thing about making fabric, especially when you are working from home, is that you can make just as much as you need without being concerned about running out or over-ordering.

For the pattern pieces I used the body and 3D forms that had been used in the collaborative piece. I adapted these slightly to work better with a chunky knit, and used 2 peaks rather than the 3, as I felt it was already impactful enough.

Initially, I just made one side and then mirrored. But I love the overall effect and think it has great impact.
